Elkville, Illinois – On the evening of Thursday, July 27, 2023, Levi Barnett, a beloved husband and father from Elkville, tragically lost his life in a car accident. The devastating incident occurred on Highway 51, leaving three others injured.
The Cause of Levi Barnett’s Death
The collision took place around 6:38 pm when a maroon 2018 Ford Fusion driven by an 18-year-old Salem resident named Kristopher Moore was traveling south on Highway 51. Moore attempted to make a left turn onto Royalton Road, crossing the path of a 1978 Jeep driven by Levi Barnett, a 37-year-old Dowell resident, who was heading north on Highway 51.
The collision resulted in the Jeep flipping over, causing the body to detach from the frame. Levi Barnett and a young passenger were both ejected from the vehicle. Tragically, Levi Barnett succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
All individuals involved in the accident, including Moore and Barnett’s young passenger, were transported to a local hospital by ambulance. Moore received a ticket for failing to yield when turning left.
The investigation into the crash is being conducted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office traffic crash reconstruction unit. The Elkville Police Department, Jackson County Ambulance Service, Jackson County Coroner’s Office, Elkville Fire Department, and Dowell Fire Department all provided assistance at the scene.
The road remained closed for approximately 2.5 hours following the accident.
