Police have taken one person into custody after a traffic accident involving a pedestrian in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, with multiple agencies responding to the scene. The driver of the vehicle fled the area without clothes on but was later found and identified as Mitchell Sharp. The pedestrian, an 18-year-old female, was pronounced dead at the scene. Sharp has been charged with several offenses, including Reckless Homicide and Aggravated Driving Under the Influence. The Illinois State Police and Mt. Traffic accident Involving Pedestrian Leads to Arrest

MT. VERNON, Ill. (WSIL) — In a recent incident in Mt. Vernon, police have apprehended an individual following a traffic accident that resulted in a pedestrian being struck. The Mount Vernon Police Department received multiple 911 calls on Sunday evening regarding a rollover traffic accident in the 600-block of Main Street.

Authorities also received reports stating that the vehicle involved had hit a pedestrian at a nearby residence. Promptly responding to the scene were various agencies, including the Illinois State Police, Mt. Vernon Fire Department, Mt. Vernon Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and Litton’s Ambulance District.

Upon arrival, officers were informed that the driver of the vehicle had fled the area, heading west while completely unclothed. Later identified as Mitchell Sharp, a 30-year-old male, he was located by officers in the 800-block of Main Street, according to the Mt. Vernon Police Department.

The pedestrian, an 18-year-old female, unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office pronounced her dead at the scene. Meanwhile, Sharp received medical treatment for his own injuries at a local hospital. He was subsequently transferred to a hospital in Evansville, Ind., for further care. However, in the early hours of Monday morning, Sharp was released, only to be taken into custody by Mt. Vernon police.

Sharp now faces several charges, including Reckless Homicide, Aggravated Reckless Driving, Leaving the Scene of a Fatal accident, Improper Lane Usage, and Aggravated Driving Under the Influence. An Illinois State Police accident Reconstructionist is currently investigating the incident, with assistance from the Mt. Vernon Police Department Detective Division.
