A tragic incident occurred in Indiana on Monday, resulting in the death of a longtime police deputy. John Durm, a deputy of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for 38 years, was assaulted during an inmate escape attempt. The suspect, identified as Orlando Mitchell, attacked Durm inside a jail sally port and stole a transport vehicle. Durm was taken to the hospital but sadly passed away shortly after the attack. The violent escape attempt unfolded as Durm was returning the attacker to the jail after a hospital visit. The suspect managed to drive the van through the facility’s gates before crashing into a telephone pole just outside the parking lot. Sheriff’s deputies at the scene apprehended the attacker, who sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Orlando Mitchell, the suspect in Durm’s killing, is also facing another murder charge for a fatal shooting that occurred last year. Mitchell will be arrested on a preliminary murder charge once he is released from the hospital, and final charges will be determined by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
Durm leaves behind a family deeply ingrained in the sheriff’s office. His son is currently undergoing training to work for the office, and his wife also works in its medical office. The community has set up a memorial for Durm at the Marion County’s Community Justice Campus, where people can visit and pay their respects.
