Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Curry County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch received a distressing call from the Brookings Police Dispatch on Sunday, April 21st. The call came from a hiker on the coastal trail near Natural Bridges, approximately twelve miles north of Brookings, at around 2:35 p.m. The hiker reported seeing a person on the rocks below who appeared to be deceased. Promptly, Sheriff’s deputies and an Oregon State trooper rushed to the scene. Additionally, the Curry County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) team was summoned to assist.
According to a post on the Curry County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, several SAR members set up a raising system to reach the victim. SAR members Andy Stubbs and Tim Hawkins courageously rappelled approximately 300 feet down to the victim. Due to the challenging terrain and location, additional support was requested.
Subsequently, members from Cape Ferello and the Brookings Fire Department, along with a USFS law enforcement officer, arrived to help transport the victim back to the parking area. The victim was identified as 69-year-old Richard Ehrhart from San Jose, California. Ehrhart had been hiking with his wife when they separated on the trail. Unfortunately, his wife returned to their car without knowing that her husband had fallen.
A Chaplin was called to assist with notifying Ehrhart’s wife, Susan Kimura. The Oregon State Police, the lead agency for the investigation, has provided information to the Curry County District Attorney for further action.
The Curry County Sheriff’s Office expressed their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Richard Ehrhart. They also issued a reminder about the potential dangers of hiking coastal trails and urged everyone to prioritize safety in outdoor activities.
