Saner passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of positivity and optimism.

Tom Farrell, the Brick Township Schools superintendent and a close friend of the family, spoke highly of Saner, describing him as the “single most positive, optimistic person ever.” Saner lived life to the fullest, embracing every opportunity that came his way.

Sadly, Saner passed away while on a cruise with his wife, Marie. Funeral arrangements have yet to be finalized.

The news of Coach Al Saner’s passing has deeply saddened the Point Pleasant Borough School District Community. Superintendent Adam Angelozzi expressed his condolences, acknowledging Saner’s profound impact on countless athletes, friends, and relatives, a legacy that will continue to resonate for generations to come.

During the fall of the previous year, the school community had the privilege of meeting and honoring Coach Saner prior to a football game. Though saddened by his passing, it is important to take the time to appreciate and fondly remember all the great things that Coach Saner brought to the schools, staff, and, most importantly, the students.

Angelozzi further emphasized that Coach Saner’s name and legacy will be celebrated whenever student-athletes compete at Al Saner Field.

A Journey Filled with Achievements

Al Saner was born in Guttenberg, NJ, and his passion for football was ignited during his time at Memorial High School of West New York, where he played under the guidance of Joe Coviello. As an All-State football player, Saner graduated in 1948, leaving a lasting impact on Memorial High School’s football program.

Following his high school career, Saner continued his football journey at St. Benedict’s Prep and later secured a scholarship to play at Gettysburg College. After serving in the Army and achieving the rank of captain, Saner embarked on his coaching career at Hawthorne High School.

It was Warren Wolf, another legendary Shore football figure, who recommended Saner for the head coaching position at Point Boro. Saner taught social studies while coaching the Panthers, retiring in 1992 after an impressive record of 161 wins, 98 losses, and 9 ties.

Saner’s first wife, Janice, was his lifelong partner for 50 years until her passing in 2011. Together, they had two sons, Jim and Gary, and two grandchildren. Saner found love again and married Marie in June 2013, enjoying his later years with her by his side.

Farrell, who considered Saner a second father, spoke highly of Marie’s devotion and care for Saner, ensuring he ate properly and attended all necessary medical appointments. The cruise they embarked on was meant to provide Marie with some relaxation, allowing her to take a break from constant caregiving.

The Point Pleasant Borough community will forever cherish the memory of Coach Al Saner. His positive influence, dedication to his students, and love for the game of football will continue to inspire generations to come.
