ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The University of Georgia campus is reeling after the discovery of a body near the intramural fields and Lake Herrick. Izzy Whitesides, a student at UGA, expressed her fear and concern after the tragic incident, urging people to accompany her to her car.

The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Laken Riley, a student at Augusta University’s College of Nursing campus in Athens. Police were alerted when Riley failed to return from her morning run, and her body was subsequently found in a wooded area behind the lake with visible injuries. Authorities suspect foul play in her death.

This incident marks the first on-campus homicide in 41 years at the University of Georgia. The last known case was in 1983 when UGA student Donna Lynn Allen was tragically stabbed to death. Warren Reid Hall, the perpetrator in Allen’s case, was apprehended and sentenced to life in prison.

UGA Police Chief Jeffery Clark assured the public that the investigation into Riley’s death is of utmost priority. “My investigators will be working this case day and night, and they will be looking at every camera that we have,” Chief Clark stated during a press conference.

As the community mourns the loss of Laken Riley, questions remain unanswered regarding the circumstances surrounding her death. Authorities continue to search for leads and urge anyone with information to come forward.

The University of Georgia and Augusta University are offering support services to students and faculty affected by this tragedy. Grief counselors are available for those in need of emotional support during this difficult time.
