Taiwanese Artist Huang Yung-Fu Passes Away at 100

Taipei, Taiwan – Huang Yung-Fu, affectionately known as “Rainbow Grandpa,” passed away on Tuesday at the age of 100 due to natural causes. Huang gained fame for transforming a former military dependent’s village into the colorful and vibrant art zone known as Rainbow Village.

The news of Huang’s passing was announced on the Facebook page of Rainbow Village, stating that “Rainbow Village lost its rainbow.” Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen also expressed her condolences and referred to Huang as a national treasure. She pledged to preserve his artworks and ensure that Taichung continues to honor his legacy.

A Life of Color and Creativity

Huang Yung-Fu was born in Taishan, Guangdong, China, in 1924. In his early years, he actively participated in significant events such as the Battle of Guningtou and the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis. Following the arrival of Kuomingtang forces in Taiwan in 1949, Huang settled in the country.

In 2007, when Huang learned about the planned demolition of nearby military dependents’ villages and surrounding houses, he decided to take action. He began painting his own residence and the surrounding walls with vibrant and colorful artwork, transforming the area into what is now known as Rainbow Village.

A Global Tourist Attraction

Rainbow Village quickly gained recognition and became a popular tourist attraction, attracting both domestic and international visitors. The renowned travel guide, Lonely Planet, even named it as one of the world’s “Secret Marvels.” Huang was honored with the title of honorary citizen of Taichung.

However, in recent years, Rainbow Village has faced legal disputes over management rights and copyrights, which are yet to be resolved. Despite these challenges, Huang’s vibrant artwork continues to captivate visitors.

A Lasting Legacy

The Taichung City Government’s Cultural Affair Bureau praised Huang for leaving behind a collection of precious artworks in Rainbow Village. To honor his memory, the bureau plans to establish a commemorative area at the end of the month, allowing visitors to pay tribute to the “beautiful memories left by Grandpa.”

The bureau has also pledged to provide full assistance to Huang’s family in organizing funeral arrangements, ensuring that his final journey is a fitting tribute to his remarkable contributions.
