The grieving family of Nomfusi Potelwa-Mpafa (46), a teacher and poet, who lost her life to a fatal shooting at her residence on August 8, have spoken about her commitment to peace. Potelwa-Mpafa was employed as a teacher at Dinizulu Senior Secondary School in Dutywa.

Her final resting place will be at Gxara locality in Dutywa on August 19.

Potelwa-Mpafa passed away in her own home, succumbing to gunshot wounds inflicted by unidentified attackers. A spokesperson for the family, Vusi Potelwa, expressed their profound loss, emphasizing that Potelwa-Mpafa was always devoted to her family.

According to Vusi, Potelwa-Mpafa was a mother of three and tragically lost her life while preparing for her son’s forthcoming initiation ceremony scheduled for December 28.

“She consistently demonstrated her love and support for us. She had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh,” said Vusi.

Fundile Gade, the Eastern Cape Department of Education MEC, offered his heartfelt condolences to Potelwa-Mpafa’s family. He also extended his sympathies to her grieving loved ones, hoping that they would find solace in their faith during this challenging period.

Mali Mtima, the spokesperson for the Department of Education, explained that the details surrounding the incident are currently unknown. A case has been filed with the South African Police Services, and an investigation is currently underway.

“All individuals affected by the incident at the school will receive psycho-social support, as the district will arrange for the service to be provided,” stated Mtima.

Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, a police spokesperson, confirmed that an investigation is ongoing following the fatal shooting of Potelwa-Mpafa at her residence in Dutywa.

Nkohli revealed that on August 8, 2023, at approximately 21:15, four unidentified men forcefully entered a house in Govan Mbeki Township and fatally shot the victim, who was later identified as Nomfusi Potelwa-Mpafa. The motive behind the incident remains unknown, but the police are actively pursuing all leads,” Nkohli declared.
