Terrell ISD has increased security after a student was shot and killed near the high school campus. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. and additional police officers were sent to the school. The victim, 17-year-old Damaria Jackson, was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead. One person of interest has been taken into custody and police are searching for a second suspect. There is no active threat to the high school campus. Counselors are available for students and staff. The district is working with the Terrell Police Department to gather more information. Terrell Independent School District (ISD) has implemented heightened security measures following the tragic shooting of a student near the high school campus. In a letter to parents, Terrell ISD explained that the incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. when authorities responded to a report of a gunshot victim in the vicinity of Trailview Drive, off of Town North Drive. Although additional police officers were dispatched to the high school as a precautionary measure due to the proximity of the incident, school operations continued as usual.
According to the Terrell Police Department, the victim was identified as 17-year-old Damaria Jackson, a junior at the high school. Despite life-saving efforts, Jackson succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. The district expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of their beloved Terrell Tigers, acknowledging that the community would need time to mourn and process their grief.
Law enforcement currently has one individual in custody on an unrelated charge, with a search underway for a second suspect connected to Jackson’s death. The police have reassured the public that there is no immediate threat to the high school campus, and investigations are ongoing in the area.
In light of this tragic event, Terrell ISD has made counselors available to support any students or staff members in need of assistance.
