A man has been accused of assaulting a police officer in Middletown, Connecticut. The incident occurred at 195 Liberty St. on Saturday morning following a complaint about noise and the sound of breaking glass. The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Winston Tate, attacked the officer, Detective Karli Travis, with a hammer. Disturbing body camera footage, released on Tuesday, captured the attack. Tate struck Travis four times before being shot multiple times by the officer while on the ground. He was subsequently apprehended and appeared in court on Tuesday. Authorities have described Tate as dangerous, stating that no one is safe in his presence. Tate showed signs of agitation during the court proceedings, even attempting to remove his prison jumpsuit before being calmed down by a public defender. Travis was taken to Middlesex Hospital for treatment and has since been released. Over 20 Middletown police officers attended a news conference in support of Travis, hailing her as a hero. Prior to this incident, Tate’s home had been visited by the police on five occasions due to disturbances. He has previously served jail time for attacking police officers in 2017 and 2020, with a one-year sentence for the former incident and probation for the latter. Middletown’s police union expressed hope that Tate would face appropriate consequences for his alleged attempt to murder a police officer. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, overseen by the inspector general’s office. Tate was discharged from the hospital on Monday before being charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, second-degree assault, assault on public safety personnel, and interfering with police. He is currently being held on a $500,000 bond..
