32-year-old Andrea Rene Cothran has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Fairway police officer Jonah Oswald. Cothran was previously charged with aggravated battery, fleeing law enforcement, reckless driving, and felony theft. The new charge alleges that Oswald died as a result of Cothran committing the three felony offenses. Cothran is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on September 20. The amended complaint filed by the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office reveals that Andrea Rene Cothran, 32 years old, has now been indicted for first-degree murder in the case involving the demise of Officer Jonah Oswald. Cothran had previously faced charges of aggravated battery, fleeing from law enforcement, reckless driving, and felony theft. The new charge asserts that Oswald’s death was a direct result of Cothran’s commission of these three felony offenses. The incident occurred on August 6, when Lenexa police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle near Interstate 35 and 95th Street. Following a chase, the suspect’s car crashed near I-35 and Lamar Avenue in Mission, Kansas, after which the suspects fled into a nearby QuikTrip. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies entered the QuikTrip to apprehend the suspects. During the altercation, one suspect, identified as Shannon Wayne Marshall from Ashland City, Tennessee, was fatally shot, while Officer Oswald was also shot and subsequently succumbed to his injuries. Cothran is currently being held at the Johnson County Jail on a $1 million bond and is set to appear in court on September 20.
