The officers responsible for the fatal shooting of a suspect who had allegedly killed a security guard at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland have been identified as Justin Thurman, Timothy Hoerauf, and Seth Wingfield. According to the Portland Police Bureau, the incident occurred on July 22 when the officers responded to reports of a man threatening hospital staff. The suspect, later identified as PoniaX Kane Calles, fired a gun inside the hospital, resulting in the death of security officer Bobby Smallwood and injuring another employee. Calles fled the scene as the police arrived.

A few hours later, a standoff between the police and Calles took place in Gresham, Oregon. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots, and Calles was found dead at the scene. It remains unclear whether he reached for a weapon during the encounter. Earlier that day, Calles had been visiting his partner, who was giving birth at Good Samaritan, but had been causing trouble and had been the subject of requests from hospital employees to have him removed.

Court records indicate that Calles had a criminal history and struggled with mental illness. In April, a pregnant woman named Ashely Heil had obtained a restraining order against him due to his “anti-government and anger issues,” fearing for the safety of her children.

The shooting in Gresham is currently under investigation by the Portland Police Bureau. Officers Thurman and Hoerauf, who have been with the bureau for 16 and 12 years respectively, along with Wingfield, who has served for seven years, are on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Calles’ death marks the second fatal police shooting in Portland this year, following four incidents in the previous year. The Portland Police Bureau is committed to thoroughly investigating these cases.
