Mark Margolis, a versatile actor known for his compelling portrayal of Hector Salamanca, the silent but menacing drug runner on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, has passed away at the age of 83. Margolis, who had a career spanning several decades, showcased his talent in various roles, including the Bolivian henchman Alberto the Shadow in Scarface, the gravelly voiced landlord Mr. Shickadance in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and the HIV-infected mob boss Antonio Nappa in HBO’s Oz.
Born in Philadelphia in 1939, Margolis began his acting journey at a young age and studied under the legendary Stella Adler. He later became her personal assistant while honing his craft, a role he cherished. Margolis also studied with Lee Strasberg, but faced financial difficulties and struggled to make ends meet. Despite setbacks, he persisted and eventually made his onscreen debut in the film The Opening of Misty Beethoven.
Margolis’ breakthrough came with his portrayal of Hector Salamanca on Breaking Bad in 2009. His character, paralyzed and only able to communicate through facial expressions and a bell, left a lasting impression on audiences. He received an Emmy nomination for his performance in the show’s fourth season finale. Margolis reprised his role as a younger Salamanca in Better Call Saul, which began in 2016.
Throughout his career, Margolis worked with acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky on multiple projects, including Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan, and Noah. He also appeared in a variety of films and TV shows, such as The Cotton Club, The Secret of My Success, Stand Up Guys, and American Horror Story.
Despite his success, Margolis remained humble and spoke candidly about the challenges he faced as an actor. He emphasized that his life had been a constant struggle, contrary to the perception of wealth often associated with those in the film industry.
Margolis is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, whom he married in 1962, his son Morgan Margolis, and his grandsons. In memory of Margolis, donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
