Man Charged with DUI and Fleeing the Scene Following Fatal Wrong-Way Crash

A man has been apprehended and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and fleeing the scene after a deadly wrong-way collision on the beltway. Jayleen Hannor, a 23-year-old resident of Macon, Georgia, was taken into custody by Maryland State Police (MSP) on Wednesday.

According to MSP, Hannor is also facing charges of failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of a crash involving death. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to nine individuals.

The deceased woman has been identified as Elizabeth Velez, a 36-year-old from Easton, Pennsylvania. Velez was driving a Nissan Pathfinder with her three juvenile children and a 36-year-old front seat passenger. All five occupants were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The crash also involved a Lexus SUV, with a driver and four adult occupants. They too sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital for medical attention.

Authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting a Mercedes CLS 450 traveling in the wrong direction on I-270 near Rockledge Drive shortly before midnight. Subsequently, Hannor was identified as the driver responsible for the collision.

Hannor had been driving the wrong way on I-270 towards the I-495 outer loop when he collided with two vehicles at exit 34. Despite the impact, he continued driving until he abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot in the Connecticut Avenue area. However, he was apprehended shortly thereafter and taken into custody. Hannor is currently under police guard at a local hospital.
