An elderly man in Hawaii was found dead after being attacked by a group of dogs. The incident occurred when a witness saw the man being mauled by four dogs in the middle of the road. Despite efforts to save him, the man died on the way to the hospital. The dogs were later traced to owners who were not present during the attack. The owners could face charges for failing to control a dangerous dog, with penalties including imprisonment and fines. This incident adds to a string of fatal dog attacks in the US in recent years. The incident took place at approximately 9 a.m. in Kau on the Big Island of Hawaii. According to a statement released by the Hawaii Police Department, a witness heard a disturbance and observed a man being assaulted by four dogs in the middle of the road. The witness successfully frightened off the animals and promptly contacted emergency services.

Upon arrival, law enforcement found the man unconscious. Unfortunately, the victim passed away while being transported to a local medical facility, where he was later officially pronounced dead. The deceased individual has been identified as Robert Northrop, a 71-year-old resident of Ocean View.

Hawaii Police Chief Ben Moszkowicz stated, “There is presently no evidence to suggest that the victim incited this tragic attack. This incident is an incomprehensible calamity that could have been prevented.”

Although the dogs had been previously reported as strays, they were eventually linked to owners who were absent at the time of the incident. The Hawaii County Animal Control and Protection Agency took custody of all four animals, as well as a litter of 10 puppies.

No details regarding the breeds or conditions of the dogs were disclosed.

The owners may face charges of negligent failure to control a dangerous dog, which becomes a felony if an unprovoked dog attack results in severe physical harm or death. In such a case, the dog owners could potentially be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, fined substantial amounts, and have the dogs humanely euthanized.

In recent years, the United States has witnessed several fatal dog attacks. In 2022, a pack of dogs killed a 61-year-old postal worker in Florida while he was delivering mail. Furthermore, an 80-year-old man lost his life and three others were injured during an attack in San Antonio that occurred in February..
