Holidaymakers traveling to Spain this summer have been warned about a deadly food bug found in supermarket omelettes. Several cases of botulism illnesses have been linked to these omelettes in popular tourist spots. The toxin found in omelettes can cause paralysis and even death. The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has reported infections in different regions of the country. Grupo Empresarial Palacios Alimentación, the manufacturer of the omelettes connected to the infections, has recalled their product. Holidaymakers planning a trip to Spain this summer have been warned about a deadly food bug found in a popular local dish. Several cases of botulism, a potentially fatal poisoning caused by consuming contaminated food, have been linked to supermarket omelettes in popular tourist hotspots. The toxin found in these omelettes can cause paralysis and even death.
As of 24th July 2023, there have been five confirmed and four probable cases of botulism. The infections have been reported in various regions of Spain, including Galicia, Asturias, Valencia, Madrid, and Andalusia. Additionally, Italy has recorded two cases of botulism linked to Spanish omelettes consumed in Spain.
The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has stated that all the affected individuals had a history of consuming packaged precooked potato omelettes from different supermarkets and brands. Three of the individuals who tested positive were hospitalized, but fortunately, no deaths have been reported.
In response to the outbreak, the manufacturer of the omelettes connected to the infections, Grupo Empresarial Palacios Alimentación, has recalled their product and halted production. It is believed that some of the contaminated products may have also been distributed to France and Portugal.
So far this year, Spain has reported 21 other suspected cases of botulism. Spanish officials are reminding consumers, especially during the summer heat, of the importance of properly preserving foods. They have advised that packaged Spanish omelette products should be kept refrigerated.
