Man’s Body Found Inside Plastic Barrel at Malibu Beach

A man’s body was discovered inside a 55-liter black drum at Malibu Lagoon State Beach in California after a lifeguard spotted the unusual item floating offshore, officials revealed. Lieutenant Hugo Reynaga of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that homicide investigators are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the death of the unidentified Black adult. The body did not appear to be significantly decomposed, and there were no signs of violence or blood spatter, according to the lieutenant.

The unusual discovery began when a state park maintenance worker noticed the large drum floating in the lagoon on Sunday afternoon. The worker used a kayak to retrieve the heavy barrel and left it unopened on the shore. Unfortunately, the high tide overnight swept it back into the water. On Monday morning, a lifeguard swam out to retrieve the barrel again and found a “non-responsive” person inside. Paramedics and deputies were called to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead on the beach.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has received reports from several individuals who claim to have seen the container floating in the lagoon over the weekend. The container’s exact floating duration remains unclear. California State Parks spokesperson Jorge Moreno confirmed that the beach will remain open, except for the designated crime scene area.
