Body Found Inside Plastic Barrel at Malibu Beach

A man’s body was discovered inside a plastic barrel at Malibu Lagoon State Beach in California, after a lifeguard noticed the unusual item floating offshore, officials revealed.

The body was found inside a 55-liter black drum, which was located by Lieutenant Hugo Reynaga of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Monday.

Authorities have identified the deceased individual as a Black adult and are currently conducting a homicide investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

According to Reynaga, it is unclear how long the body had been inside the container, although it does not appear to be significantly decomposed. There were no signs of blood spatter or other indications of violence, he added.

A state park maintenance worker initially spotted the large drum floating in the lagoon on Sunday afternoon. Retrieving it using a kayak, the worker left it unopened on the shore, but overnight high tide caused it to be swept back into the water.

The following morning, a lifeguard swam out to retrieve the barrel from the lagoon. Upon opening it on the shore, they discovered a “non-responsive” person inside. Paramedics and deputies were immediately called to the scene, and the man was pronounced dead on the beach.

While it remains uncertain how long the container had been floating in the lagoon before its first retrieval, the sheriff’s department has received multiple reports from individuals who claimed to have seen it over the weekend, Reynaga stated.

Despite the crime scene, the beach will remain open, except for the affected area, as confirmed by California State Parks spokesperson Jorge Moreno.
