Man Shot and Killed by Deputies in Diamond Bar Neighborhood

A 30-year-old man was fatally shot by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies in a Diamond Bar neighborhood in June, according to newly released body-worn camera footage. The footage shows that the man, identified as Benjamin Chin, ignored authorities’ orders to surrender and threatened a nearby motorist before he was shot.

The incident took place on June 19 around 11:30 a.m. when authorities received multiple calls about Chin walking along Crooked Creek Drive wearing a ballistic vest and firing shots from a rifle. Prior to this, Chin had stabbed his mother in the back outside their home before continuing down the street with the rifle.

Security camera videos from homes captured Chin on the sidewalk, and witnesses reported seeing him assault his mother and aim the rifle at a passing motorist. Chin fired several shots before deputies arrived at the scene, with his mother following him and pleading for him to drop the rifle.

Despite orders from deputies to surrender, Chin continued to advance towards a vehicle on Diamond Bar Boulevard. Two deputies then shot and struck Chin. He was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. The rifle he was carrying was determined to be a ghost gun, which is an unserialized weapon that can be manufactured by users.

The Sheriff’s Department will continue to investigate the shooting, and the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for an independent review to determine whether the use of force was warranted.
