Cops Identify Pilot Killed in Springfield Helicopter Crash
Springfield, Ohio – Authorities have identified the pilot who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash on Saturday, July 29 in Springfield. Isaac Lee Santos, a 36-year-old experienced pilot from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was the sole occupant of the helicopter at the time of the incident.
According to reports from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the helicopter, a Bell 206, lost control after colliding with power lines and subsequently crashed into a nearby cornfield. Troopers from the area responded to the scene located at East Possum Road near Interstate 70 after receiving reports of the crash. The wreckage was discovered deep within the cornfield.
Santos was conducting aerial application work for Helicopter Applicators, Inc. when the accident occurred. Aerial application, which involves spraying pesticides or other substances onto crops from agriculturally used helicopters, was being carried out when the helicopter struck the power lines.
The crash caused the power lines to fall onto the eastbound and westbound lanes, resulting in traffic disruptions. Santos was pronounced dead at the scene.
This tragedy is not the only helicopter accident to occur in the United States this year. Several military helicopter crashes have claimed the lives of 14 aviators, leading to the grounding of aviation units for training by the US Army in April. In separate incidents in Alaska and Kentucky, 12 soldiers lost their lives in helicopter crashes.
