Head-on Crash on U.S. 151 Injures Three in Fond du Lac County

FOND DU LAC – Three individuals sustained injuries, with one in serious condition, following a head-on collision on U.S. 151 near Hickory Road on Sunday night.

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving a call from the county Communication Center about a wrong-way driver traveling north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 151 near County Y in Lamartine Township around 10:40 p.m. on Sunday.

In response, deputies from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office immediately headed to the location with their emergency lights and sirens activated, trying to intercept the vehicle.

As a responding deputy was driving down the on-ramp to U.S. 151 from Hickory Road, they observed the wrong-way vehicle still traveling northbound in the southbound lanes near Hickory Road, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Unfortunately, before the deputy could intercept the wrong-way vehicle, it collided head-on with a southbound vehicle.

Deputies were quick to arrive at the scene and provide assistance to the injured parties.

The driver of the southbound vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and did not require hospitalization. He was identified as a 20-year-old man from the Madison area.

The passenger of the wrong-way vehicle sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah. The 28-year-old woman from Menomonee Falls is currently in stable condition.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital. Identified as a 27-year-old man from Menomonee Falls, the driver exhibited signs of impairment and was found to be under the influence of an intoxicant while operating the motor vehicle.

The sheriff’s office stated that alcohol consumption and driving in the wrong direction on a divided highway were contributing factors to the crash. All occupants involved in the collision were wearing seatbelts.

The southbound lanes of U.S. 151 remained closed for approximately one hour following the incident.
