SHAWNEE COUNTY—The individual suspected of the tragic shooting that resulted in the death of a 2-month-old infant in Topeka is currently being held in a Kansas jail.
According to online jail records, 29-year-old Alfred A. Smith was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections early Thursday and is being detained without bail.
It should be noted that Smith was previously incarcerated in the Greene County Missouri jail on unrelated charges on July 20, as confirmed by online booking records.
The incident took place on July 14 when law enforcement responded to a Topeka hospital after 2-month-old Alonzoe K. Smith was brought in with a gunshot wound, as stated by Lt. Ronnie Connell.
The infant was promptly provided with medical attention for a life-threatening injury but unfortunately succumbed to it later on. The shooting incident occurred in the 1000 Block of SW Mulvane Street. Following the child’s tragic demise, the police reached out to the public for assistance in locating Smith. No details regarding the specific charges he will be facing in relation to this case have been disclosed by the police yet.
