Police have arrested 18-year-old Jeremiah Shanks in connection with the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Elijah Martin during a robbery on the near north side of Indianapolis. An 18-year-old man, Jeremiah Shanks, has been arrested by the Indianapolis police for his alleged involvement in a fatal shooting on the city’s near north side. The victim, 19-year-old Elijah Martin, was shot during a robbery.
The incident took place on July 12 when an officer from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was flagged down by a person who said that a man had been shot on North Meridian Street near 33rd Street. The injured man, later identified as Martin, was found by the officers who provided first aid until medical assistance arrived. Unfortunately, Martin did not survive and was pronounced dead at Eskenazi Hospital where he was taken in critical condition.
Investigations revealed that Martin was shot inside an apartment building on North Meridian Street and had managed to leave the building after the incident, seeking help from someone nearby who then flagged down the passing IMPD officer. Homicide detectives identified Shanks as a suspect in the case, resulting in his subsequent arrest.
Shanks, who has a prior criminal record, including a guilty plea to felony armed robbery in an unrelated case last October, is now facing preliminary charges of robbery and homicide. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and determine the final charges against him.
