Tragedy struck the Russian River near Potter Valley when a 47-year-old Ukiah man drowned while wading with his family. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible drowning.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies were flagged down by citizens in the area who had already discovered the victim, later identified as Jorge Medina. Deputies immediately took over CPR efforts until paramedics arrived, but unfortunately, their attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Medina was pronounced dead shortly after.

According to reports, Medina had been wading in chest-deep water in an attempt to find relief from the sweltering heat. He was momentarily out of sight of his longtime girlfriend and their daughters when tragedy struck. Medina, who was known to be a swimmer, was found floating face down in the river a short time later.

Witnesses informed the MCSO that Medina had been complaining of a severe headache prior to being found unconscious. It is unclear if the headache played a role in his drowning or if there were other factors involved.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety, even in seemingly calm and shallow areas. It is crucial to always swim with a buddy, especially in unfamiliar or unpredictable waters. Additionally, anyone experiencing sudden and severe symptoms such as a headache should take caution and seek medical attention if necessary.

Our hearts go out to Jorge Medina’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find solace and support as they navigate through their grief..
