A man in Lake Charles, Louisiana died after being subdued with a stun gun by Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when deputies responded to a noise complaint in the area. The complainant reported that a man, later identified as David W. Hungerford, was yelling at someone in a parking lot and appeared to be stumbling around.
While deputies were in the area searching for Hungerford, they received another call about a suspect matching his description stealing from a convenience store. Shortly after, they received a third call stating Hungerford was inside a fast food restaurant having trouble standing.
Deputies located Hungerford in the area and attempted to make contact with him. However, he fled and a physical altercation ensued when deputies tried to detain him. In an attempt to subdue him, deputies used a Taser and were able to take him into custody.
Moments later, Hungerford became unconscious and deputies immediately began lifesaving measures. Medical personnel arrived at the scene and transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death will be determined by the coroner.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso expressed condolences to Hungerford’s family and friends, acknowledging that despite his actions, he was still someone’s loved one. Mancuso stated that he reviewed the body cam and in-car camera footage and believes that the deputies acted appropriately. The investigation is ongoing, and the findings will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office.
According to authorities, Hungerford had entered multiple businesses and caused disturbances prior to the deputies’ arrival. The motive behind his behavior remains unknown.
