A tragic incident unfolded on June 14, 2023, in Lehigh Acres, Florida, when a woman was shot in the face during a dispute over a property. The defendant in the legal dispute, Yohani Gonzalez de Lazaro, allegedly stormed into the woman’s home and killed her brother and mother before shooting her. The woman, identified as Danae Velazquez Alavarez, is now set to meet her family’s accused murderer for the first time since the shooting.

According to court records, the property dispute arose when Gonzalez de Lazaro attempted to claim ownership of the parcel registered to Velazquez Alavarez. It is believed that the civil case may have triggered the violent incident that occurred just hours before the court hearing.

Gonzalez de Lazaro remains in custody at the Lee County Jail, where he filed a plea of not guilty to the charges. He faces a $250,000 bond for each of the attempted murder charges and no bond for the homicide counts. He is being represented by Assistant Public Defender Gary Bass.

The victims of the shooting were identified as mother Eugenia Veronica Alvarez and son Josue Vega Alvarez. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support the surviving family member, Danae Velazquez Alvarez, who suffered a gunshot wound to the face.

Gonzalez de Lazaro’s arraignment in the criminal case is scheduled for July 24. Meanwhile, the community has rallied together to raise funds for the victims’ family, with the fundraiser collecting over $17,400 towards its $50,000 goal.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from unresolved disputes. It highlights the importance of peaceful resolution and the need for effective legal mechanisms to prevent such violence..
