In a tragic incident, Mexican journalist Luis Martín Sánchez Iñiguez was found dead in the state of Nayarit. The 59-year-old reporter had been missing since Wednesday, and his body was discovered on the outskirts of the state capital, Tepic. The journalist’s wife had reported him missing along with his computer and cellphone.

According to the Nayarit state prosecutors’ office, Sánchez Iñiguez’s body showed signs of violence, and two handwritten signs were found on it. While handwritten signs are often left by drug cartels, the motive behind the killing is still under investigation.

This is not the first instance of violence against journalists in Mexico. Earlier this year, news photographer José Ramiro Araujo was stabbed and beaten to death in Baja California. In 2022 alone, 15 media workers have been killed in Mexico, making it one of the deadliest years for journalists in the country.

Coincidentally, just two days after Sánchez Iñiguez’s disappearance, another journalist, Jonathan Lora Ramírez, was abducted in the same area. However, Lora Ramírez was found alive and in good condition on Saturday.

The Mexican authorities are currently investigating the possibility that these abductions and the killing of Sánchez Iñiguez are related to the journalists’ profession. The Committee to Protect Journalists has condemned the killing and called on Mexican authorities to thoroughly investigate the case.

The targeting of journalists in Mexico is a grave concern for press freedom and democracy. It is essential that the authorities take immediate and meaningful action to protect journalists and bring those responsible for these acts of violence to justice. The safety and security of journalists must be a priority, as they play a crucial role in upholding democracy and informing the public..
