Accident – Death – Obituary News :
On the morning of yesterday, a devastating accident occurred in Muang district of Lampang province, resulting in the death of a five-year-old schoolgirl and injuries to 24 other students. The incident involved a van that was carrying a total of 25 students, despite its capacity being intended for only 12 passengers. The driver of the van, known as Ms Saengchan, admitted that the license to operate the school bus had expired.
Details of the Accident
The Toyota van carrying the students overturned on the Lampang-Muang Pan road at Thung Pongrian village around 6.50 am. When first responders arrived at the scene, they heard the cries of the students trapped inside the van. Tragically, a five-year-old girl was found dead, while her elder sister, a student in Mathayom Suksa 4, was among the injured.
Ms Saengchan, aged 60, informed the police that she was transporting students from Prathom Suksa 1 to Mathayom Suksa 6 when the accident occurred. She explained that a motorcycle had suddenly cut into her lane, causing her to swerve and lose control of the vehicle, leading to the van overturning.
Legal Ramifications and Ongoing Investigations
Following the accident, Ms Saengchan was charged with failing to renew her license to operate a school bus after it expired on April 30. Additionally, she was fined 2,000 baht for modifying the van to accommodate more passengers than legally allowed. Of the 24 injured students, 16 have been discharged from the hospital, while eight remain under medical care.
The Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) has pledged to collaborate with the Department of Transport, law enforcement agencies, and other relevant bodies to ensure strict oversight of student transportation. Obec’s secretary-general, Thanu Wongchinda, expressed condolences for the young girl’s tragic death and vowed to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Another Tragic Incident
In an unrelated incident on Thursday, two students aged 15 and 13 lost their lives, and 19 others sustained injuries in Sa Kaeo’s Wang Nam Yen district. The students were travelling in a songthaew bus that was hit by a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Montri, was detained by witnesses, while two passengers who fled the scene were later apprehended in the district.
As authorities continue to investigate both accidents, the community mourns the loss of young lives and advocates for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring.
