Accident – Death – Obituary News :

May 24—The Alaska State Troopers have officially identified the pilots who tragically lost their lives in the crash of a cargo plane loaded with fuel last month. The pilots have been named as 68-year-old John Sliwinski from Anchorage and 63-year-old Harry Secoy from Palmer.

The Alaska State Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identities of the pilots in an update released on Thursday.

John Sliwinski, the owner of Alaska Air Fuel based in Wasilla, was known for operating the plane that provided essential fuel deliveries to remote communities. He was honoured at a memorial service as a dedicated aviator, family man, and active member of the Anchorage Grace Church community.

Harry Secoy, who had worked as an attorney in Washington state for over two decades according to the Everett Herald, transitioned to a career as a DC-4 pilot in Alaska. He was a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot and his obituary highlights his years of service in the aviation industry.

The tragic incident occurred when the cargo plane, carrying approximately 3,400 gallons of unleaded fuel and two 100-gallon propane tanks, crashed shortly after taking off from Fairbanks International Airport on the morning of April 23. The plane was en route to the Northwest Alaska village of Kobuk, a journey spanning 300 miles. According to a preliminary federal report, the DC-4 crashed into the Tanana River approximately 7 miles southwest of the airport before sliding into a bluff and being engulfed in flames.

Investigations revealed that one of the pilots reported an in-flight fire just after departure and requested to return to the Fairbanks airport before the tragic crash occurred. Eyewitnesses reported hearing an explosion and witnessing one of the plane’s four engines catching fire.

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident and is expected to release a probable cause report next year.
