Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A man wanted on two separate warrants for violent crimes, including a 2008 murder in Las Cruces, has been apprehended in Mexico and is currently being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center. The arrest was made possible through the joint efforts of the U.S. Marshals Service District of New Mexico Southwest Fugitive Team and Mexican authorities.

Arrest and Charges

Oswaldo Corral, 45, was located and apprehended by Mexican Authorities in Ciudad de Chihuahua, Mexico on May 22. He has been charged with multiple felonies, including first-degree murder in connection with the 2008 case. Corral was transported to the Santa Teresa Port of Entry by Mexican officials and handed over to the U.S. Marshals Service District of New Mexico before being taken into custody by the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office.

Crime Details

Corral is wanted by the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office for his involvement in the murder of 30-year-old Steven Apodaca in Mesilla Park on Nov. 17, 2008. He is also facing charges from the Las Cruces Police Department for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon for allegedly shooting a man in the parking lot of the Sun Lanes Bowling Alley on Nov. 15, 2008.

Corral was one of five individuals involved in Apodaca’s murder, and he was one of two defendants charged with murder. His accomplice, Jimmy Ray Martinez, was convicted in 2011 of second-degree murder and other charges.

Witness Account

According to a police report from the homicide, a witness who was identified as Apodaca’s cousin provided details of the events leading to the murder. The witness stated that several men arrived at the trailer park where Apodaca was located, and a confrontation ensued, resulting in Apodaca being chased, beaten, and ultimately shot.

Long-Awaited Arrest

Corral had been using a false alias and identification for years, making it challenging for authorities to track him down. The U.S. Marshals took on the case in 2008, with all leads pointing to Mexico. The recent arrest of Corral is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of law enforcement officers in ensuring justice for the victims and their families.

Statement from U.S. Marshal

Acting U.S. Marshal Russell Lashley commended the collaborative efforts of local and federal law enforcement agencies in bringing Corral to justice. He stated, “The arrest of Oswaldo Corral is an example of the unwavering dedication demonstrated by law enforcement officers sworn to protect the citizens of our communities and the great State of New Mexico.”
