(WHDH) – A shocking revelation has rocked the City of Melrose as a firefighter has been arrested and is now facing federal charges for allegedly using a stolen identity to secure his position. The firefighter, known only as John Doe, reportedly assumed the identity of Henry Huang to get hired at the fire department in January. However, federal prosecutors have revealed that Henry Huang is not his real name, but rather the stolen identity of a 13-year-old who passed away over two decades ago.
The news of this deceptive act has left residents of Melrose in disbelief. One resident, Izzy Beausoleil, expressed her concerns, stating, “If he showed up to my house and he’s just some random person that’s not who he says he is, it’s just, like, why are you not who you say you are and you’re trying to help people? I just think it’s weird.”
According to the criminal complaint, the man has been using the stolen identity of Henry Huang for several years, even going as far as obtaining a driver’s license under that name in 2018, 2019, and 2023. The situation took a turn when he applied for a passport in March 2023, prompting an investigation into his true identity. The Registry of Motor Vehicles uncovered that the man had also been issued a second driver’s license under a different identity in 2018.
As the investigation unfolds, the firefighter’s home remained silent, with no one answering the door when approached by authorities. Melrose Mayor Jennifer Grigoraitis disclosed to 7News that the firefighter has been placed on leave pending further developments.
The man appeared in federal court on Thursday to face a slew of charges related to identity theft and fraud. As the case progresses, the residents of Melrose are left grappling with the unsettling reality that a trusted public servant may not be who he claims to be.
