Accident – Death – Obituary News : A recent study published in JAMA Network Open has shed light on the relationship between gender identity changes and depressive symptoms among sexual and gender minority (SGM) youths. The study, led by Andre Gonzales Real, MD, MSc, from The University of Texas at Austin, found that while approximately 1 in 5 SGM youths aged 15 to 21 reported changes in their gender identity over time, these changes were not associated with an increase in depressive symptoms.

The researchers conducted a longitudinal study involving 366 SGM youths from community-based agencies and college groups in the United States. Participants were assessed at four different time points over a period of approximately 3.5 years. The study used the Beck Depression Inventory for Youth (BDI-Y) to measure depressive symptoms and tracked the number of times participants’ gender identity changed.

The results revealed four distinct trajectories of gender identity among the participants: cisgender across all four waves, transgender or gender diverse (TGD) across all waves, initially cisgender but TGD by wave 4, and initially TGD but cisgender by wave 4. Interestingly, 18.3% of participants reported a different gender identity at least once during the study period, with 7.7% transitioning more than two times.

While participants who transitioned from cisgender to TGD initially reported higher levels of depression compared to the cisgender group, this difference was not statistically significant once exposure to LGBT violence was taken into account. The study also found that gender identity variability was not linked to changes in depressive symptoms over time.

The researchers concluded that gender identity exploration is a normal part of adolescent development for some youths and should not be considered abnormal. Health care clinicians should be aware of this trend and provide support to youths transitioning to TGD identities to help mitigate the adverse effects of LGBT-related violence or stigma.

In summary, the study highlights the importance of understanding the complexities of gender identity development and its impact on mental health outcomes among SGM youths. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of gender identity changes on overall health and well-being..
