YUBA CITY – A dramatic police chase involving a wanted felon came to an unconventional end when the suspect swam to an island on the Feather River in Sutter County on Wednesday.

The incident unfolded when a vigilant Yuba City police officer spotted the wanted felon, identified as 32-year-old Alejandra Herrera, driving in the 500 block of Colusa Avenue around 12:45 p.m.

Upon attempting to pull over Herrera, he made the reckless decision to flee, prompting a high-speed pursuit through the city’s streets.

The chase escalated as Herrera steered his vehicle onto a levee road, where he abruptly abandoned the car and leaped into the Feather River in a bid to evade capture.

Despite the risks, Herrera managed to swim to an island in the river, where he stubbornly refused to surrender to law enforcement authorities.

Responding swiftly to the situation, the Yuba City Fire Department deployed watercraft to the area and successfully contained the island, ultimately locating and apprehending Herrera.

Following his capture, Herrera was promptly transported to a hospital to receive treatment for injuries sustained during his barefoot escape and subsequent encounter with a K-9 unit. He will then face charges related to his outstanding felony warrant and the reckless pursuit that ensued.
