Accident – Death – Obituary News :
A young man, identified as 25-year-old Daniel Simon from Romania, tragically lost his life in a canoeing accident at Trout Lake over the weekend. Simon, who worked at Rustico Ristorante in Telluride, was one of three individuals on the canoe when it capsized, plunging them into the icy waters of the lake.
Rescue Efforts and Recovery Operation
San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters reported that a witness to the accident came to their aid in a kayak, with all three individuals managing to grasp the kayak for support. Unfortunately, Simon lost his grip and submerged underwater before they could reach safety. The frigid conditions of the water led to extreme hypothermia among the survivors.
Recovery of Simon’s Body
Following the incident, a joint operation involving Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office, and San Miguel Search and Rescue was initiated to recover Simon’s body. CPW’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team located his body in 12 feet of water, just 20 yards from the shore.
Importance of Water Safety
As investigations continue to determine the exact cause of Simon’s death, authorities highlight the critical importance of water safety measures, such as wearing life vests. Colorado boating regulations mandate the presence of wearable PFDs for all individuals on board, with specific emphasis on children under 12 wearing them while on the water.
Weather Conditions and Water Hazards
CPW spokesperson John Livingston emphasised the dangers of icy waters in Colorado, particularly the Western Slope, where rapid snow runoff contributes to extremely cold water temperatures. He stressed the need for boaters to be aware of weather conditions, especially in cases of high winds that can lead to hazardous situations on the water.
National Safe Boating Week and Awareness Campaign
With National Safe Boating Week approaching from May 18-24, the focus on water safety becomes even more critical. The campaign slogan “Wear It” underscores the importance of always wearing a life vest while boating and refraining from any activities under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
