Accident – Death – Obituary News :
An Ohio grand jury has formally charged a man with murder, felonious assault, and child endangerment following the tragic death of his girlfriend’s 21-month-old son in Cincinnati.
Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers announced on Monday that emergency services were called to a residence in Cincinnati on the early morning of May 2, where they found the child, later identified as Kareem Keita, unresponsive. The toddler was rushed to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital ICU but sadly passed away on May 5. Subsequent investigations revealed that Kareem had sustained multiple injuries, including facial and rib fractures, liver lacerations, and brain swelling from hemorrhaging. The autopsy confirmed that Kareem’s death was the result of homicide.
Expert analysis of the injuries determined that they could only have been caused by severe impacts or deliberate blows. Kareem’s mother had been in a relationship with the accused, 23-year-old Edward Murray, for approximately three months. On the evening of May 1, Murray and Kareem were playing outside before returning indoors, where Murray claimed the child was tired and needed to skip dinner for bed. After spending some time with Kareem in his room, Murray allegedly left to smoke marijuana with his girlfriend, prosecutors stated.
The following morning, Murray discovered Kareem in a critical condition, unresponsive and not breathing. Murray was unable to provide a plausible explanation for the child’s severe injuries, according to the authorities.
Expressing her shock and disgust at the case, Prosecutor Powers stated, “This is an incredibly tragic and abhorrent situation. It takes a truly malicious individual to inflict such severe harm on an innocent child. The thought that someone capable of such actions could be walking among us is deeply disturbing. We are committed to ensuring that this perpetrator faces the full consequences of their actions.”
Murray was arrested by Cincinnati police on May 10 on charges related to child abuse and is currently being held at Hamilton County Jail on a bond of $1 million.
During a court appearance on May 11, Murray’s defense attorney highlighted that his client had no prior criminal record.
“He serves as a prime example of why individuals should refrain from speaking to law enforcement,” stated the defense attorney, as reported by local ABC affiliate WCPO. “I believe that any statements made by the defendant were coerced through deceptive tactics, leading to a false confession.”
