Accident – Death – Obituary News : After more than thirty years, investigators have finally identified the man whose skeletal remains were found in a chimney in Madison. Madison Police announced on Monday that the remains belong to Ronnie Joe Kirk, bringing closure to a long-standing mystery.
The discovery of Kirk’s remains dates back to September 3, 1989, when the owner of the Good n’ Loud Music store on University Avenue noticed a skull visible through a pipe connected to the building’s chimney during renovations. Despite this breakthrough, many questions still linger regarding Kirk’s death, as the circumstances surrounding how and when he died remain unknown.
Born in 1942 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kirk was raised by genetic relatives who adopted him. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes expressed the challenges in determining the time of death due to the advanced state of decomposition when the remains were discovered.
A forensic autopsy determined that Kirk was a genetic male between 18 and 35 years old and approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall. Kirk had ties to the Tulsa area, Texas, and Alabama, but the police are particularly interested in understanding what brought him to Madison and how long he resided in the city.
In an effort to gather more information about Kirk’s life, the police department released a photo of him from the early 1960s, provided by his family. Additionally, advancing DNA technology played a crucial role in identifying Kirk. Through the DNA Doe Project, scientists were able to extract DNA from rootless hair samples and trace Kirk’s family tree, ultimately leading to his identification.
Kirk, who was married and divorced twice and had children, was found without any form of identification. Speculation has arisen regarding his gender identity or expression due to the discovery of a paisley-print dress and an iron cross necklace with the remains. However, the DNA Doe Project has clarified that there is no evidence to suggest Kirk identified as anything other than male.
Madison Detective Lindsey Ludden is actively seeking tips and information from anyone who may have known Kirk during his time in the city. Tips can be submitted to Ludden via phone or email, as the investigation enters a new phase with the hope of shedding light on Kirk’s life and the circumstances surrounding his death..
