ANDREWS COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- The Texas Department of Public Safety is currently conducting an investigation into a tragic incident that occurred on Friday morning, resulting in one fatality and another individual sustaining serious injuries.

According to the official crash report, the incident took place at approximately 7:05 a.m. on May 10, on State Highway 176, near mile marker 240. The report indicates that 29-year-old Julio Cesar Torres, a resident of Edinburg, was travelling in an eastbound direction on SH 176 in a Cadillac Escalade. Torres lost control of the vehicle, veering off the roadway. In an attempt to re-enter the road, he overcorrected his steering, causing the vehicle to skid sideways into the westbound lane. Subsequently, a collision occurred with a GMC Sierra that was travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the GMC Sierra has been identified as 67-year-old Robert Vanzant, a resident of Andrews. Vanzant sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and was promptly transported to a hospital in Lubbock for further medical treatment. Unfortunately, Torres, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The authorities are currently carrying out an in-depth investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine the exact cause and any contributing factors. The road safety and traffic enforcement agencies are working diligently to ascertain the sequence of events that led to this tragic incident.
