Tragedy struck a quiet Camden County community as a devastating house fire claimed the life of one man, while leaving a woman, five police officers, and two firefighters injured in the tragic incident.

The distressing event unfolded on a fateful Thursday afternoon, around 1:15, when emergency services responded to a distress call regarding a house fire on the 400 block of Cooper Foley Road, located in Waterford Township, officials confirmed.

Upon arrival, emergency crews were met with a harrowing sight as the house was engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the structure. Despite the dangerous conditions, Waterford Township police officers bravely entered the inferno in a desperate attempt to rescue the two occupants trapped inside.

Inside the blazing residence, officers managed to locate a woman and successfully extricate her to safety. Undeterred by the intense heat and smoke, the officers re-entered the building in a bid to rescue a male resident, but unfortunately, they were thwarted by the unforgiving flames and were unable to locate the man in time.

Meanwhile, multiple fire crews descended upon the scene, battling ferociously to bring the raging inferno under control and prevent further devastation.

Following the successful extinguishing of the fire, emergency responders made a grim discovery as they found the lifeless body of the male resident, identified as 89-year-old James Lucas, inside the charred remains of the building.

The rescued woman was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for her non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the ordeal.

In the aftermath of the tragic event, five courageous Waterford Township officers were also hospitalised for treatment of smoke inhalation, with two of them subsequently being transferred to Temple University Hospital for further medical care.

Additionally, two dedicated Waterford Township firefighters were treated for burns at a local hospital as they bravely battled the intense flames to contain the fire.

As the community grapples with the shock and grief of this devastating incident, authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire in a bid to shed light on the circumstances that led to this tragic loss of life and injuries.
