The Swat police have apprehended a 70-year-old man for allegedly tying the knot with a 13-year-old girl in the Barikot tehsil of the district. The authorities have also taken the girl’s father into custody for consenting to the underage marriage. Both individuals are currently behind bars as further investigations are being conducted.

Lower Swat SP Ghulam Sadiq Khan informed The Friday Times that the elderly man, known as Hanifa, purportedly entered into matrimony with the 13-year-old, named Saira*, with the blessing of her parents. However, as soon as news of the alleged marriage surfaced, the police swiftly intervened to halt the ceremony.
Legal Action Taken
SP Ghulam disclosed that charges have been filed against the girl’s father and the groom under the Child Protection Act and Child Marriage Act. The victim has been examined by a medical board, and the investigative process is ongoing. Once the inquiry is concluded, the nikkahkhwan (marriage officiant) and witnesses will also face repercussions.
