WACO, Texas (KWTX) – A mother and stepfather in Waco, Texas, have been arrested on charges of endangering a child after they allegedly left an 18-month-old and a 5-year-old alone in their apartment while they went out to run errands.
Darnell Atkins Jr., aged 22, and Desiree Haynes, aged 23, are facing two counts of endangering a child, which is a second-degree felony in Texas.
The incident came to light on May 8 when a concerned caller found a 5-year-old girl crying alone in the parking lot of the Azur Apartments. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the girl had been left alone in the apartment by her caregivers.
When law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, they found an 18-month-old girl unattended in one of the bedrooms of the apartment. The children were then taken into custody by the Waco Police Department Victim Services and Child Protective Services (CPS) were notified to assist in the case.
Attempts were made to contact the residents of the apartment, and it was revealed that the woman responsible for the children was the mother of the 5-year-old and the grandmother of the 18-month-old.
In their statement to the police, Atkins and Haynes admitted to leaving the children alone in the apartment while they went out for errands. Following their confession, both individuals were arrested and taken to the McLennan County Jail, where they are currently being held on unknown bonds.
