Authorities in Vernon, Connecticut recently apprehended a suspect in possession of an altered firearm equipped with a high-capacity magazine during a domestic disturbance that spilled out of a local residence and into a neighbouring community that includes a school, according to a police report.

Domestic Incident Unfolds

The incident unfolded at approximately 1 p.m. on Tuesday at a residence in Vernon, as reported by local law enforcement officials. A woman who had reportedly been threatened with a firearm managed to flee the scene, only to be pursued by a male individual identified as 23-year-old Xavier Velez, a resident of Vernon, according to the incident report.

Proximity to School

The altercation took place in close proximity to Skinner Road School, prompting the institution to activate a “secure mode” protocol while police officers responded to the scene. Vernon police swiftly apprehended Velez near the residence, with police dog Franco successfully locating the altered firearm in a wooded area nearby. The weapon featured a tampered serial number and a high-capacity drum magazine, as detailed in the incident report.

School Safety

Authorities reassured the public that the school itself was never directly threatened during the incident. However, precautionary measures were taken to ensure the safety of students and staff in the vicinity.

Charges and Arrest

Xavier Velez faces a range of charges, including first-degree threatening with a firearm, first-degree assault, third-degree assault, disorderly conduct, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal alteration of a firearm identification, first-degree reckless endangerment, illegal possession of a large-capacity magazine, and interfering with a police officer, according to the incident report.

Velez was remanded into custody on a $500,000 bond, with a scheduled appearance at Rockville Superior Court on Wednesday, as confirmed by law enforcement officials.
