A Chinese woman on the brink of getting married was left in utter disbelief when she learned that she is biologically male, just before her wedding ceremony. This shocking revelation came after living 27 years of her life identifying as female, only to be diagnosed with a rare disorder.
According to reports by the South China Morning Post, the woman, identified as Li Yuan (name changed to protect her identity), hails from the Hubei province in central China. It was revealed that Li had been carrying a testicle in her abdomen, indicating her biological male status.
Concerns arose when Li Yuan failed to menstruate and experienced delayed breast development since puberty. At the age of 18, she sought medical attention for abnormal hormone levels and potential ovarian failure. Despite doctors recommending further chromosome tests, Li and her family did not take the advice seriously.
During a comprehensive examination before her wedding, veteran gynaecologist Duan Jie diagnosed Li with a rare disorder known as congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Test results confirmed that Li possessed male sex chromosomes despite outwardly appearing female. Dr. Duan remarked, “Socially, Li is female. But chromosomally, she is male.”
The news came as a devastating shock to Li Yuan, making it difficult for her to come to terms with the truth. The incidence of CAH is rare, with only 1 in 50,000 newborns affected. Both of Li’s parents carried recessive genes for the disorder, giving her a one in four chance of developing it.
Further tests revealed that Li also suffered from osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency due to delayed treatment. Doctors recommended immediate surgical removal of the testicle in her abdomen to mitigate the high cancer risk it posed.
In early April, Li successfully underwent the procedure to remove the testicle. She now requires regular follow-up tests and long-term hormone therapy. Dr. Duan emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for individuals exhibiting similar symptoms to Li’s.
