A man from Sacramento, California, was taken into custody on Monday on suspicion of child endangerment after reportedly leaving his granddaughter in the care of a homeless woman while he went to a bar, as reported by KXTV.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 7:45 p.m. reporting a man seeking help because his 7-year-old granddaughter had allegedly been abducted for human trafficking. Deputies promptly responded to the scene, where they found the man, identified as 54-year-old Jason Warren, to be heavily intoxicated, according to the sheriff’s office.

Warren confessed to authorities that he had given a homeless woman, identified as Lauren Jope, $20 to take his granddaughter to a thrift store while he spent approximately four hours at a bar. Surveillance footage captured Jope leaving the premises with the child, and after about 30 minutes of search efforts, she returned the child to the parking lot upon hearing announcements from a sheriff’s helicopter.

Jope recounted her encounter with Warren, stating that he approached her while she was walking down the street and asked her to accompany his daughter to buy clothing. Concerned about Warren’s state of intoxication, Jope decided to take the child to her camp to provide food.

Following an investigation, it was revealed that the child’s aunt held full custody and had entrusted Warren with childcare as she had work commitments. The child, who was unharmed, was reunited with her aunt.

Warren was subsequently arrested on charges of felony child endangerment and is currently detained at the Sacramento County Main Jail on a bail amount of $75,000. His court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.

Jope expressed gratitude for being in the right place at the right time to care for the child, emphasizing the importance of responsible guardianship. She reflected, “I’m grateful I was present when needed, as she could have been left in the care of someone who may not have had her best interests at heart.”
