HOLLAND, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – DNA technology has once again cracked a cold case in western Mass. This time, it has led to an arrest in a brutal sexual assault case dating back more than two decades.
This case marks a major milestone for Hampden County. According to District Attorney Anthony Gulluni, this is the first time forensic investigative genetic genealogy has contributed to the arrest of an offender. The suspect, 48-year-old Jamie Dodge from Brownsville, Maine, is charged with aggravated rape and kidnapping in the sexual assault of a woman in Holland, Massachusetts nearly 24 years ago.
The incident took place when a woman was walking in the area of Holland on a Sunday afternoon. She was grabbed from behind by an individual, dragged into the nearby wood line, and brutally assaulted. Despite extensive efforts from law enforcement at the time, no suspects were identified.
However, thanks to advancements in DNA technology, a DNA profile generated from early forensic evidence preserved from the crime scene finally led to the identification of Jamie Dodge as a suspect. Using forensic investigative genetic genealogy, scientists were able to match aspects of Dodge’s DNA profile to known profiles in the database, ultimately leading to his arrest.
District Attorney Gulluni emphasised the significance of this breakthrough technology, stating that it has been instrumental in solving several cold cases across the country. He mentioned the Golden State Killer case in 2018 as one of the first high-profile cases to be cracked using genetic genealogy.
Gulluni’s office is actively reviewing their cold case records to identify cases that could potentially benefit from genetic genealogy. With access to this cutting-edge DNA technology, they aim to generate new leads and bring closure to families affected by unsolved crimes.
He highlighted the importance of never giving up on cold cases, as obtaining answers and justice, whether the offender is alive or not, remains crucial for families and the criminal justice system.
Jamie Dodge is currently held on $250,000 cash bail and is scheduled to appear in court on July 11th for further proceedings.
