POLK COUNTY, Florida – Deputies Shot in April Released from Hospital

Polk County, Florida – The two Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies who were shot by a suspect back in April have been discharged from the hospital, as confirmed by authorities. Lt. Chad Anderson sustained a gunshot wound to the arm, which penetrated into his chest. The bullet became lodged between his heart and spinal column, leading to Anderson undergoing two emergency surgeries during his hospital stay. Deputy Craig Smith, who was also injured in the incident, was shot twice and required intensive care treatment.

During a media briefing held two days after the shooting, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd explained that the incident occurred following a series of burglaries in the vicinity of Hunt Fountain Park in North Lakeland. Consequently, the Sheriff’s Office escalated its presence in the area. The park, which typically closes at 10 p.m., was found with a vehicle parked there around 12:22 a.m. on April 27.

Upon approaching the individual in the vehicle, later identified as 26-year-old Kmac El Bey, the deputy encountered resistance and called for backup. Subsequently, Lt. Anderson and Deputy Smith arrived at the scene, bringing the total number of deputies, trainees, and a K9 unit to four. As attempts were made to coax El Bey out of the vehicle, the situation escalated when the suspect began shooting as the vehicle started moving. In response, deputies retaliated, resulting in El Bey being fatally shot.

Officials later revealed that El Bey was a homeless individual and identified as a sovereign citizen. Sheriff Judd highlighted that Moorish sovereign citizens such as El Bey typically reject the authority of federal, state, and local laws, often leading to confrontations with law enforcement.

In a statement shared on social media, the Sheriff expressed that the injured deputies have a challenging road to recovery ahead of them. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has established an official donation page to assist the deputies with their expenses during this period.

For those looking to support the injured deputies, donations can be made through the official donation page on the Polk County Sheriff’s Office website.
