A tragic incident occurred late Saturday night when a driver crashed into the gates of the White House and subsequently died, as confirmed by authorities.
Although the identity of the driver has not been disclosed by the police, the Secret Service has assured the public that there was no threat to the White House resulting from the incident.
President Joe Biden, who was not present at the White House during the time of the crash, was reported to be spending the weekend in Delaware by the Secret Service.
The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene at 15th St. and Pennsylvania Ave. NW around 10:30 p.m. after a vehicle collided with the White House security perimeter gates at a high speed, as stated in a tweet by the department.
“At this juncture, the incident is being treated solely as a traffic crash by MPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit,” the department further explained.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, mentioned that security personnel made efforts to save the driver’s life while following standard protocols.
This marks the second instance in five months where a vehicle crashed into the White House gates. In a previous incident in January, a man rammed into an exterior gate and was later apprehended by Secret Service agents. The motives behind the crash were unclear at the time.
Prior to this, a Delaware man named James Cooper crashed into President Biden’s motorcade in Wilmington, Del., and was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence. However, authorities confirmed that there was no direct threat to the president in either of these incidents.
In another incident in May 2023, a 19-year-old man named Sai Varshith Kandula drove a U-Haul into the barriers surrounding Lafayette Square, situated across from the White House. The individual was found to have a Nazi flag in his vehicle and was promptly taken into custody.
