In a heartbreaking turn of events, the body of a five-year-old girl has been recovered from the Nyamindi River in Kirinyaga County, while her mother remains missing. The incident, which took place on Saturday, May 4, has left the community in shock and disbelief.
The young girl, identified as Precious Wairimu, drowned in the river alongside her mother, Maureen Wangui, 29. Wangui had reportedly jumped into the swollen river with her daughter strapped to her back and was swept downstream.
Residents of Gichogo village made a grim discovery on Sunday, May 5, when they spotted the lifeless body of the minor floating in the water. Authorities were alerted, and the child’s body was retrieved from the river.
The area police commander, Mr Johnson Wachira, confirmed that the search for Wangui’s body was ongoing, with efforts being made to locate her and bring closure to the family.
Witnesses to the tragic incident, including a guard at a nearby coffee factory, were left stunned by Wangui’s actions. The motive behind her decision to take her own life and that of her daughter remains unclear.
Family members expressed their shock and grief over the loss, calling for support from the government to ensure that Wangui’s body is also found. Wangui, who was visiting her grandparents in Kirinyaga from Embu, had disappeared from the family compound before the tragic events unfolded.
Local resident, Ms Catherine Muthoni, recounted how the watchman witnessed Wangui’s sudden leap into the raging river, which had burst its banks due to heavy rains. The community is reeling from the tragedy and seeking answers to the heartbreaking loss.
