Ohio State Football Legend Ken Fritz Passes Away at 66

Ken Fritz

An Ohio legend has left us, as Ken Fritz, a former Ironton High School and Ohio State football standout, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 66.

Early Life and Football Career

Born on November 21, 1957, in Southeastern Ohio, Ken Fritz had a passion for football from a young age. He attended Ironton High School, where he excelled on the football field, earning three varsity letters. In 1975, he was recognized as the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League Co-Player of the Year and the Associated Press Ohio Class AA Lineman of the Year.

In 1976, Fritz joined the Ohio State football team under the coaching of Woody Hayes. He played for the Buckeyes from 1976 to 1979, lettering for three consecutive seasons. During his time at Ohio State, Fritz became an All-Big Ten selection in his final two seasons and achieved the prestigious honor of being a consensus All-American in his senior year. The Buckeyes had a remarkable 11-0 record in the regular season that year, but suffered a heartbreaking 17-16 loss to No. 3 USC in the Rose Bowl.

A Memorable Moment Outside the Lines

While Fritz was widely recognized for his on-field accomplishments, he was also involved in a notable incident that occurred off the field. At the end of the 1978 season, Fritz found himself restraining Coach Hayes after he punched Clemson linebacker Charlie Bauman during the Gator Bowl. Television footage and photos seemed to suggest that Hayes also struck Fritz, but Fritz himself clarified that Hayes was simply trying to break free and did not intend to harm anyone.

Life After Ohio State

Following his successful college football career, Fritz was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 10th round (No. 277 overall) of the 1980 NFL draft. He embarked on a professional football journey, showcasing his skills at the highest level.

The cause of Ken Fritz’s passing has not been disclosed at this time. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire Ohio State football community as they mourn the loss of this extraordinary athlete.

Ken Fritz will always be remembered as a true Ohio State football legend, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and dedication to the sport. His contributions to the game and his alma mater will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Ken Fritz. Your spirit will forever be with us.
