Remembering Alonzo Johnson: A Great Football Player
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – Local fans and Gator Nation alike are mourning the passing of a truly great football player. Alonzo Johnson, a standout track and football star for the Rams in the late 70s and early 80s, passed away on Thursday due to some sort of medical issue at the home of a family member here in Bay County.
A Legacy on and off the Field
Alonzo Johnson, known affectionately as Zo, was an exceptional athlete who left a lasting impact on the University of Florida (UF) football program. After graduating high school in 1981, he continued to flourish on the football field at UF, playing a pivotal role in the success of the Gators.
During his time at UF, Johnson was part of some incredible defenses that helped the Gators achieve impressive 9-1-1 records in both 1984 and 1985. Despite NCAA probation preventing these teams from competing for the national championship, Johnson’s performances on the field did not go unnoticed.
His outstanding skills earned him All-America and All-SEC selections in both years. Johnson’s college career statistics speak for themselves, with an impressive 335 tackles, fifty-five tackles for loss, and twenty-seven sacks. Following his college success, he went on to play two years with the Eagles in the NFL.
Acknowledgment of Excellence
Johnson’s contributions to the Gators’ football program were later recognized when he was voted onto the Gators’ All-Century Team and All-Time Team. In 2006, he was also inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great.”
His impact extended beyond the football field. Mosley alum Patrick Miller, who played alongside Johnson for three years, spoke fondly of their close bond as teammates and friends. They supported each other throughout their football careers and even worked together during the summer at Panama Machinery and Supply building trusses.
Miller praised Johnson’s incredible athleticism and versatility on the field. He described him as “the man” who could excel in various positions, from sacking the quarterback to dropping into coverage. Johnson’s exceptional skills made him one of the best athletes Miller had ever known.
A Farewell to Alonzo Johnson
Alonzo Johnson, a beloved figure in the world of football, tragically passed away at the age of 60. Our deepest condolences go out to his family during this difficult time.
Alonzo Johnson will always be remembered as a remarkable athlete who left an indelible mark on the University of Florida football program. His contributions to the game, both on and off the field, will forever be cherished by fans and teammates alike.
