The video footage captured the moment when 43-year-old Vadim Sashchenko was walking northbound on Columbia St. with the German Shepherd on a leash. As police approached him, Sashchenko brandished what appeared to be a firearm and pointed it at Officer Brandon Riedel.

Officer Riedel, fearing for his life, fired four shots as Sashchenko threw the gun to the ground. Despite the officers’ efforts to perform CPR, Sashchenko was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, no police officers sustained any injuries during the incident, and the German Shepherd was safely taken to the Humane Society.

In response to the officer-involved shooting, Officers Riedel and Stuart Drynan, who witnessed the events, have been placed on Critical Incident Leave.
